The mission of Norway House is to be a bridge between Norway and the United States.
Norway House in the Upper Midwest has as its mission the
preservation and promotion of an appreciation and understanding of the
American-Norwegian experience and its relationship to modern Norway.
Norway House has three roles:
as a CONVENER to call people together for a common goal,
as a COLLABORATOR to help others achieve success, and
as a PLATFORM, a multi-purpose building to serve as a place to conduct Nor-Am activities.
Norway House focuses on promoting an appreciation and understanding of the American Norwegian experience and its relationship to modern Norway and the world. Physically, Norway House is destined to be a conference center building which will architecturally and functionally link America's Norwegian heritage with contemporary Norway and America. Norway House will be located in the Twin Cities and incorporate all the amenities needed to serve its mission, such as an auditorium, meeting rooms, events hall, food service facility, etc. With both
office and meeting space, Norway House can serve as a home for other
American-Norwegian and Nordic institutions and organizations. A Capital Campaign will fund its creation and a combination of endowment proceeds and revenue from its use will fund its operational costs.
Norway House - becoming a reality
The
vision is to create a Norway House which will architecturally and functionally link America's Norwegian heritage with contemporary Norway and America.
Norway
House will be a permanent place for showcasing and exchanging
accomplishments, activities and ideas in the areas of art, culture,
education, business, science and the environment.
Norway House will be a meeting place for American-Norwegian institutions and organizations.
Norway
House will be a place for hosting myriad of events, including meetings,
seminars, lectures, recitals, presentations and social gatherings.
Norway House will architecturally and functionally link America's Norwegian heritage with contemporary Norway and America.
Norway House, as an organization, brings support and visibility for programs that engage all who look to
Norway as a partner in significant global issues. Most importantly,
Norway House, as a facility, will link the peoples of America and Norway more closely
together and will be an inspiration to those who touch or are touched
by it.
The Importance of Norway House
Norwegian
Americans have always expressed pride in their heritage. Festivals and
gatherings to celebrate and share Norwegian heritage are to be found
throughout the areas of the United States where Norwegians settled.
While all of this activity would lead one to believe that it is
relatively easy to be in touch with one's Norwegian American roots, and
that since Minneapolis is the home of the Honorary Norwegian Consulate General
in the Minnesota, it is noteworthy that many of the resources of each of
the entities mentioned are scattered. It would be of significant
benefit if there were a central crossroads location for contact with
Norwegian Americans and Norway.
