Pysanky with a Nordic flair
Make bright and colorful pysanky for Easter, with traditional and Nordic-influenced designs.
Learn to make pysanky, the ornate decorated eggs from Eastern Europe and the Baltic countries, with Nordic-inspired designs. The artwork is created by repeatedly outlining designs in beeswax and dying the eggs. Renata Fossett will walk you through the steps so you will end the class with a completed egg.
In this class you will choose from a selection of designs, then learn to do the following:
· Use a kistka, the tool for holding melted beeswax and writing on the egg.
· Dye in a sequence of colors as you build the design.
· Build up designs with repeated use of beeswax and color.

Decorate Påskris (Easter Switches) with Kari Tauring
Learn about the Nordic Easter tradition of decorating pussy willow switches. Create colorful switches to take a brighten your home.
Påskris - Pussy Willow Switches and Feather Branches at Easter
Learn about the Nordic Easter tradition of decorating pussy willow switches. When Christianity came to rural Norway, Finland, and Sweden around 1200 A.D., the ancient land-based traditions were kept in families and blended with the new church practices.
Påskris, or Passover Switch/Tree, is one such tradition. In this class, which is a combination of lecture and hands-on crafts, you will make a påskris and learn about the meaning of symbols of this tradition. You will also learn the folk songs, charms, and practices for each day of Holy Week as you decorate your switch.
Christians in warmer climates used palm tree fronds for their celebrations. People of the northlands didn’t have access to palms, so they used pussy willows. However, when Easter comes early, as it does this year, pussy willows aren’t ready yet. So, switches from the base of lindens or river birch can also be used.
For the crafting portion of the class, switches will be decorated with bits of wool or cotton fluff. Feathers, seed pods, and other decorations of colorful string, yarn, or ribbon create a lovely sight to brighten your home during this gray portion of spring. Kari likes to use curbside switches cut from the base of Linden or river birch.
Some craft materials will be provided, and you are encouraged to bring some along for yourself and to share. Cute decorating supplies are available through Ingebretsen’s: Easter Tree (ingebretsens.com)
This class is suitable for children aged 7 and above. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Norway House does not offer refunds. Please be sure you can attend on the day for which you registered.

A Coat Dyed Black: A story of the Norwegian Resistance
Don Pugnetti Jr. listened to family stories and interviewed resistance members. The author will talk about his book and writing it.
Norway House is pleased to welcome Don Pugnetti Jr. to talk about Nazi Germany's occupation of Norway during World War II and his book, A Coat Dyed Black: A Novel of the Norwegian Resistance.
His historical novel is based on true events and real experiences of resistance fighters who he interviewed in past years and chronicled their courageous stand against Nazi tyranny. He has done extensive research on the war years in Norway. Many of the people he interviewed did not see themelves as heros. They simply did what they felt they must do. They also felt a strong need, still, to remain anonymous.
Don lives in the Washington state community of Gig Harbor. He was a long-time newspaper reporter and editor and also served as a policy advisor, strategist and speech writer for a state elected official. He has taught writing and communications courses as a visiting professor at the University of North Florida and as an adjunct instructor at Pacific Lutheran University. Don has been a contributing writer for The Norwegian American.
Karen Himle, who has served as host for TPT Minnesota Channel programs on a variety of topics, will interview Don in this conversational and informative talk.
Copies of A Coat Dyed Black will be available for sale and for signing.
This event is free, but an RSVP is appreciated.

Introduction to Orienteering
Learn about orienteering - what it is, how to do it, and how to find events that you can participate in
Competitive orienteering is the sport of navigation—often held in unfamiliar terrain—using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in the least amount of time. In a less competitive setting, orienteering is an activity well-suited to all ages and abilities.
In either case, orienteering is considered to be a “thinking sport” - one which combines strategic thinking, decision making, navigation skills (map reading and interpretation), and travel through any variety of terrain. Orienteering is a sport for everyone and a fun way to exercise your body and mind as you enjoy the outdoors.
This class session will provide introductory level information about the sport of orienteering. We will cover basic map reading and navigation skills, decision making and strategy, and basic compass navigation skills. Following some preliminary classroom instruction, we will put our new orienteering knowledge to work outdoors on an actual orienteering course on site at the Norway House.
This class is appropriate for all ages 6 yrs and up. Kids of any age are welcome (orienteering events are often enjoyed by little kids in backpacks and strollers). For the outdoor portion of this class, please dress appropriately for the weather of the day.
For a fun look at competitive orienteering, check out this short video showing kids at work (and play) on an orienteering course in the woods. Note that, in addition to running, there is lots of thinking and decision making going on at the same time.
Link to the video: https://youtu.be/gAbyuq2jEac?si=Ql-5usUeN9kv1Nfd
John and Gwen Daniels are members of the Minnesota Orienteering Club and they can help you find events and tell you more about the Club and what it offers.
Orieteering is very popular in Norway and one of the top orienteers in the world is Norwegian Kasper Fosser.
This event is free to Norway House members; $5 general admission; $3 to Ventura Village residents. Children under 8 are free.
Beginning Kransekake with Brenda Lewis
Learn to make a classic Norwegian kransekake cake - the towering must-have dessert for weddings and graduations.
A beginner “how to” for creating the classic Kransekake cake.
Ever wondered what it takes to make this 18th century Scandinavian wreath cake? Want to start a new family tradition? Have a special event coming up that is calling for this celebration cake?
This class will walk through the steps to create a classic Kransekake, the towering cake made with rings of cake that gradually get smaller in size. The class includes both demonstration and participation components. From grinding almonds to the final decorations, attendees will leave with a solid base of knowledge for creating their own masterpieces.
Classic Kransekake made with ground almonds has a chewy texture and keeps well.
This class is taught by Brenda Lewis, who learned from long-time kransekake baker and teacher, Lorraine Jasinski. After Brenda earned a few Minnesota State Fair blue ribbons on her own, Lorraine “anointed” Brenda to be her successor as a teacher at Norway House. Brenda clearly remembers how overwhelming the process can be when starting out and wants to make it as easy as possible for new bakers.
The class is 2 hours long. It is appropriate for bakers 12 and over.
Please note: Norway House does not issue refunds. If you find you can't attend, consider giving your ticket to a friend. Norway House doesn't not charge a fee for transferring tickets.

Giving old family journals, letters, and photos a new, creative life
This class meets for three sessions: Saturdays, May 16, 23, and 30 from 10:30 - 12:30.
If you’re like most of us, you might have boxes of old family journals, letters, photographs, records, receipts from multiple generations of your relatives. And, if you’re like most of us, we don’t know what to do with them: it doesn't feel right to throw it all out, nor does it feel right to just let it sit.
Finally, we have a solution! Bring yourself or multiple generations of your family! Why not use these “family archives” as inspiration, material, and jumping off points for creativity?
Don’t you think that your ancestors would like the physical remnants of their lives to see the light of day? To inspire you to create, to tell their story, or to tell it slant, or to create a different world with them as characters. In a very real way, it brings the past alive!
Join former Coffee House Press publisher and current literary agent Chris Fischbach as he leads a two-hour laid-back workshop that explores different creative activities you can do with your family archives. Don’t worry! This about ideas and fun, not about anyone judging anyone else’s work!
Please bring with you a fresh notebook, writing implements, erasers, highlighters, any art materials, really—along with any or all old written family materials. Prior to class, please come with a general idea about what your material contains, and pull 3-4 sentences or paragraphs that you might use as starting-off points during class.
Examples of what to bring: Old family journals, letters, photos, maps, documents such as marriage licenses, birth certificates, shopping lists, keepsakes, ticket stubs, travel documents, passports…you get the idea.
You’ll leave the class with new ways to discover and create, to make something new out of something old, and something you and your family can cherish for years to come. Families are welcome! Ages 12 - 120.
Still have questions? Please check out the FAQ section below where the instructor helps you understand what to expect in the class.
Please note: All sales for class seats are final. If you can't attend, you can transfer your place in class without any fees to another person.

Giving old family journals, letters, and photos a new, creative life
Chris Fischbach, a former publisher, leads a creative workshop that explores activities you can do with your family archive. 3-session class
This class meets for three sessions: Saturdays, February 7, 14, and 21 from 10:30 - 12:30.
