  • 913 East Franklin Avenue Minneapolis, MN, 55404 (map)

Norway Art® and its owner, Dr. Mary Jo Thorsheim are proud to present this exhibition of limited edition lithograph reproductions of paintings by renowned Norwegian artist, Elling Reitan. One of the most popular and famous out of Norway today,  Reitan's paintings have found the walls of public and private collections the world over. Patrons of his work include numerous Norwegian governmental departments and organizations, Victoria & David Beckham, Statoil, Manchester United footballer Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Bruce Springsteen, and Her Majesty Queen Sonja of Norway. In 2000, Elling Reitan's work was selected to adorn the Nobel Peace Prize diploma awarded to Laureate Kim Dae-jung

Peer Gynt AS holds a festival each year in the town of Vinstra in Gudbrandsdalen to celebrate Ibsen's play, Peer Gynt. The festival notably awards those Norwegians who have made a positive national and international impression. Elling Reitan was named the Peer Gynt Artist of the year in 2005. The exhibition in the Coltvet Room features many of the pieces Reitan made that were inspired by Peer Gynt, including colorful depictions of Peer's Ride Over Beseggen, Anitra's Dance, In the Hall of the Mountain King, and Solveig's Song.

Norway Art is based at Norway House, where visitors make appointments at their convenience to view some of the art from the Norway Art collection and possibly choose a treasure for their home or office. Since 1979 when Mary Jo Thorsheim established the Norway Art business, fine prints and paintings have been imported to the United States and Canada.

ELLING REITAN

Elling Reitan (b. 1949 in Trondheim) is a pupil of Odd Nerdrum and Bjørn Sverrbo and his mentor is Jens Johannessen. He dedicates his butterfly motif to Jens Johannessen, which can be found in many of his works, spreading its wings out from a female form or from a “picture in the picture. Yet Reitan has found and developed his own, specific style, often influenced by Edvard Munch and religious Middle Age motifs in strong colors.

He has participated in more than 150 separate and group exhibitions in Norway and abroad, and he made his debut in a juried exhibition in Trondheim’s Kunstforening in 1979.

Today, Elling Reitan is one of Norway’s most renowned and popular, contemporary multi-media artists (his work includes not just paintings and watercolors, but also coal drawings, lithographs, carborundum colour etchings, serigraphs, and glassware). He has found his personal style which is unique for him--bold colors, motifs, and composition. He is often called “The artist with the beautiful colors.”
