The Edvard Grieg Society of Minnesota is pleased to announce the nine finalists for its first-ever voice competition and second annual Edvard Grieg Society of Minnesota Competition. The purpose of The Competition is to expose the Twin Cities community to the music of Edvard Grieg and promote the best of Norwegian and Nordic music from past and present.

The Edvard Grieg Society of Minnesota Qualifying was held in March in an audio screening round for two divisions — Young Artist, ages 18-23 and Advanced, for ages 24-35. Finals will be free and open to the public and held at Mindekirken Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 9, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. with finalists competing for first, second, and third place prizes in each division. Prizes range from $500 to $1,500 and also include a performance opportunity in the Competition Winners' Recital on June 9 at 2:00pm and a feature performance on the Edvard Grieg Society of Minnesota’s 2018-2019 season calendar. Performers were required to submit three songs in Norwegian or Danish by Edvard Grieg and two other pieces of their choosing in any Nordic language by another composer.

Judges include Norwegian-American soprano Dr. Melissa Culloton, a St. Olaf College and University of Minnesota graduate who is an active performer, voice teacher and Norwegian coach in the Twin Cities; Dr. Dan Dressen, Associate Provost and former Music Department Chair at St. Olaf College, and familiar tenor soloist locally and nationally; Dr. Marla Fogderud, a recitalist and voice teacher who studied at the Norwegian National Academy of Music in Oslo, and is in demand as a vocal adjudicator, language coach, and translator; and Maria Jette, soprano and local treasure who has graced virtually every Twin Cities stage, as well as national and international venues.

The nine finalists represent the most exciting, fresh talent in the vocal performance world. Congratulations and good luck to all as they progress in the next stage of competition.
