Starting with the rise of Norwegian art in the early 19th century, Stevenson will guide us through a brief overview of Norway’s ‘coming of age’ in the art world as Norwegian artists formed Norway’s own artistic identity through the Romantic, Impressionist, and Expressionist periods. Thanks to the artists from these periods, such as Johan Christian Dahl and Edvard Munch, Norwegian art became known on the international scene and provides a context for Norwegian art today.

Currently, thanks in part to their socio-political nature, Norway and the rest of the Nordics are creating art that reflects their values. Dedicated to art that cultivates freedom of expression, openness, accessibility, social equality, and active community participation, the Nordics are enjoying a reemergence on the international scene.

Join us as we explore some of the emerging artists and trends out of Norway and the Nordics and discuss how their commitment to the arts, and Nordic Cooperation, is informing the global art conversation.
