Edvard Grieg's 175th Birthday Party!

  • Mindekirken, The Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church 924 East 21st Street Minneapolis, MN, 55404 United States (map)

Join us in celebrating 175 years since Edvard Grieg's birthday, June 15, 1843! A full stable of top-flight area performers will share songs, sonatas, stories, and surprises in celebration of the occasion in a variety show concert at Mindekirken. Birthday treats will be served in Norway House at the reception that follows the concert in honor of Norway's greatest composer.

This concert is free and open to the public. Donations will be taken at the door in support of the local food shelf supported by Mindekirken.

Performers include singers Maria Jette, Melissa Culloton, Dan Dressen; pianists Sonja Thompson, Mary Jo Gothman, and Gail Olszewski, violinist Stephanie Arado, cellist Laura Sewell, and bassist Rolf Erdahl and oboist Carrie Vecchione of OboeBass! The audience will be expected to sing along in a couple key numbers!

Repertoire to be performed includes selections from Grieg's catalog of more than 150 songs, 66 Lyric Pieces for Piano, 4 solo sonatas for string instrument and piano, and a few surprises from his beautiful music of all sorts for different combinations of instruments and voices. He wrote a lot of music! Our celebration will mix perennial favorites and under-performed masterworks played by wonderful musicians and Grieg specialists.

Thanks to Mindekirken, Norway House, and the Edvard Grieg Society of Minnesota for their support of this event!
