Priscilla Chang and Jihyang (Jane) Son, Winners of the 2019 Edvard Grieg Society of Minnesota Piano Competition, perform works of Edvard Grieg and Synne Skouen to kick off the 2019-20 Edvard Grieg Society Recital Series at Mindekirken.

On June 8, 2019, five finalist pianists competed for prizes in two age categories. Priscilla Chang was the winner of the Advanced Category, and Jihyang Son won the Young Artists Division and the William Halverson Prize for best performance of a work by Grieg.

The recital includes performances from Grieg's Lyric Pieces for the piano, Ms. Chang performing a selection from Grieg's beloved Haugtussa Song Cycle with soprano Melissa Holm-Johansen, soprano who will also MC the concert, the evocative new work, "Sul G," by Norwegian composer, Synne Skouen, and a duo performance of selections from Grieg's piano, four-hands version of his Holberg Suite.

Advanced Division winner Priscilla Chang began piano lessons at age seven. The following year she placed first in the Dallas Music Teachers Association Solo Competition. After she and her family moved to California, she continued her studies in music and participated successfully in a number of competitions. She graduated with her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in piano performance from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University (2015), studying with Ellen Mack. Chang is now a doctoral candidate in piano performance studying with Prof. Alexander Braginsky at the University of Minnesota.

Young Artist Division Winner Jihyang (Jane) Son is pursuing her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at the University of Minnesota. Born in South Korea, she began studying the piano at age six. At age eight, Son immigrated to Canada and began her piano studies with Dr. Kyung Kim, with whom she currently studies at the University. Jihyang is the winner of various awards from music festivals and provincials in Canada, and recently placed second in the Thursday Musical competition.

The recital commences Saturday, September 28 at 1:30 pm in the sanctuary of Mindekirken, the Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church, 924 E 21st St, Minneapolis, MN. Guests are invited to “pay-what-you-can” for this performance, and those attending Mindekirken’s Rømmegrøt Luncheon prior to the concert are encouraged to stay for free.
