Champagne, Music, & Peer Gynt Sweets - Fundraiser for EGSMN Piano Competition

Edvard Grieg Society of Minnesota presents their Annual Fundraiser, Champagne, Music, and Peer Gynt Sweets:

"Grieg's Favorite Grieg Songs – Sung in English!"

Norwegian composer, Edvard Grieg wrote a total of 179 songs during his career. He often included songs at public concerts presented in Scandinavia, England, and on the continent. We know from the printed programs prepared for these concerts, most of which were preserved by Grieg himself, that he programmed some of his songs over and over again. It seems reasonable to call these his favorite Grieg songs – and these are the songs that will be presented at Norway House on January 20.

Grieg also took pains during his life to arrange for his song texts to be translated into other languages. All of his song texts were eventually translated into German, and several English translations were made from these German translations. The English translations were widely regarded as unsatisfactory, however, and in 1988 the Edvard Grieg Committee – a group of musicologists from Norway and Denmark – commissioned EGSMN Board Member & reknowned Grieg scholar, William Halverson to create new English versions of most of Grieg’s song texts. These versions were published in volumes 16 and 17 of Edvard Grieg: Gesamt Ausgabe [Edvard Grieg: Complete Works] (Frankfurt, Leipzig, London & New York, C. F. Peters, 1990 and 1991). The program on January 20 will use these English versions.

The Artists:

The artists who will be presenting this exciting program are soprano Maria Jette, baritone Alan Dunbar, and pianist Sonja Thompson. All are outstanding artists and frequent performers of Grieg. Maria is probably the best-known soprano soloist in the Twin Cities, and Sonja is one of the most sought-after collaborative pianist in the area. Alan Dunbar was one of the founders of Cantus and is now a professor of voice at Winona State University.

Registration

The price of admission is a $100 tax-deductible contribution payable to Norway House, the fiscal agent for Edvard Grieg Society of Minnesota. 100% of the proceeds from the event will be devoted to the Edvard Grieg Society of Minnesota Piano Competition for young artists that will culminate in June, 2019. Donations should be made via the link below, or by check to Norway House, specifying “EGSMN Piano Competition” in the memo. You will then receive a letter from Norway House confirming your contribution for tax purposes.
