Gingerbread Wonderland 2018 is fast approaching!
This exhibition is community driven, drawing on bakers of all skill levels, ages, backgrounds, and interests. To that end, we say, “The more the merrier!”
We seek to create another access point for families, organizations, and educational groups to start their own gingerbread decorating traditions. So, each year, we gather a team to help assemble Gingerbread Kits including each of the cookie pieces and decorative candy, as well as a recipe for our special, heavy-duty royal, recommended for optimal cookie adhesion! These kits are donated openly, on a first-come-first-served basis, to be assembled, decorated, and displayed as part of the Gingerbread Wonderland 2018 collection.
Baking together is also a great way to learn more tricks for baking and decorating your own structures. Participants will go home with an official Gingerbread Wonderland apron, a house of their own to assemble and decorate (or give to a friend!), as well as practice and tips for making their own Gingerbread Masterpiece.
Paying It Forward
In Norway, there is a concept called Dugnad in which friends and families come together in a social way to help see a community project to completion. Dugnader can be as big as a barn raising party, or as simple as assembling IKEA furniture when a friend moves.
Last year, we created and sent home 32 houses more than 20 of them came back to the exhibit, most of them from families with very small children, group homes, home school groups, and first-time bakers. These structures added into the collection of 85+ gingerbread buildings that more than 11,000 people stopped by to see, smell, and smile about. Every year, Gingerbread Wonderland grows to include more people, in a large part, because of these kits. For 2018, our challenge is 50 houses, inspiring new gingerbread traditions in our greater community.
We need you to help make these kits and spread the Holiday joy of gingerbread further than we’ve ever gone before!

Join our staff and team a few blocks south of Norway House at the Midtown Global Market. We always have a great time chatting, baking, and assembling together in a casual, social environment. Plus, we’ll demonstrate and share tricks we’ve learned to help each other with our own creations. The Midtown Global Market has numerous options for affordable international food, so don’t worry about baking on an empty stomach!
We have two 3-hour sessions available, and participants are welcome to sign up for one or both.
Sunday, October 21 5:00-8:00 PM
Monday, October 22 5:00-8:00 PM
All participants of the 2018 Gingerbread Kit-Making Team will be publicly recognized during the length of the exhibit. Participants will go home with an official Gingerbread Wonderland apron and a kit to decorate themselves or share with someone they think might join!
