Elaine Tyler May, a historian of the United States in the twentieth century and a Regents Professor in the Department of American Studies at the University of Minnesota.

Jonas Bergan Draege, a joint postdoctoral research fellow with the Belfer Center's Middle East Initiative (MEI) and the Center for International Development's Evidence for Policy Design.

Opening Reception: The Ballad of Daisy & Billy

Local Norwegian-American artist, Bob Hest, presents a series of playful paintings and rugs that chronicle the settlement of Western Minnesota's Red River Valley by Scandinavian Immigrants at the turn of the century. Norway House's Galleri explodes with Bob Hest's brilliant colors and vivacious subjects with charming detail. Norway House patrons may recognize Hest's work, namely "Yes, Lena, there are foxes in Lofoten," as the signature artwork for this year's Midtsommer Gala. Norway House is proud to showcase Bob Hest's artwork this Fall.

Norway House Members and friends are invited to join Bob Hest and Norway House as we celebrate an evening full gorgeous oil paintings and textiles while enjoying food and a champagne toast courtesy of Barbette and a special live-music guest at 6:00 PM.

A full stable of top-flight area performers will share songs, sonatas, stories, and surprises in celebration of the occasion in a variety show concert at Mindekirken. At this FREE event, you’ll have the opportunity to meet Peter Neill, Director of the World Ocean Observatory and Borton Overseas’ featured lecturer on this Antarctic journey. Peter is a renowned expert in maritime history, art, exploration, and marine environmental issues.

Sunniva Sorby will also be joining us. She made history in 1993 as one of the four team members of the American Women’s Antarctic Expedition. Sunniva is passionate about Antarctica and has worked in the Polar Regions for the past 20 years. She and Peter will share their insights on several aspects of Antarctica, including how its environment impacts the earth.

Lady With A Stick - Inter-tribal: The Norwegian Experience

Kari Tauring is a musician, storyteller, and educator. Her identity as Norwegian American deepens in step with the timeline of her performances which she sometimes calls "Before Potatoes" (Bronze Age and Viking Era) and "After Potatoes" (Catholicism to Lefse). 

Identifying as Norwegian can really only come in the latter half of the "After Potatoes" period when Norway was finally winning independence. The struggles and relationship building of the Romantic period between districts and countries still has resonance in how we relate to one another today.

Author Talk with Hanne Ørstavik

Hanne Ørstavik is one of the most remarkable and admired authors in Norwegian contemporary literature. Her literary breakthrough came in 2005 with the publication of Love (Kjærlighet), which was voted the 6th best Norwegian book of the last 25 years in a prestigious contest in Dagbladet. Since then, the author has written several acclaimed and much discussed novels and received a host of literary prizes. Ørstavik comes to Norway House to discuss Love in it's new English translation.
