Welcome Mats Zuccarello!

IMG_0454.jpg

The Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce - North Chapter and Norway House - the National Norwegian Center in America are holding a meet-and-greet event with our members and the greater Norwegian community to meet the new face of the Minnesota Wild, Oslo native Mats Zuccarello!

After recording 40 points including 15 power-play points across his 48 games with the New York Rangers and Dallas Stars last season, Mats Zuccarello signed a $30M five-year contract with the Wild this summer, making him one of the most talked-about acquisitions to the team.

In addition, the ambitious athlete has historically been very active in the Norwegian-American communities and enjoys connecting with fellow countrymen in the US. He established the Zuccarello Foundation in 2016 to assist and help grow Norwegian grassroots sports throughout the country and is an ambassador for Right To Play, an organization that helps educate and empower children living in disadvantaged communities. Through his own charity events, Zuccarello has helped raise more than $1,000,000 for Right To Play.

---

Come meet Mats Zuccarello at Norway House on Monday, October 21st, enjoy light hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar at Norway House's Kaffebar, and check out Nordic Ware: the Art & Science of the Bundt in the Gallery.

FULL CLASS: A Spice Tapestry: Baking with Cardamom with Zehorit Heilicher

Scandinavians are serious about their cardamom. According to data collected by the United Nations, Swedes consume 18 times more cardamom per capita than the median country, while Norwegians consume almost 30 times more per capita. There are no statistics kept for Minnesotans and cardamom, but we probably consume a respectable share.

Inspired by flavors of the ancient trade routes and the Midwestern love of a good Bundt cake with coffee, Zehorit Heilicher will share recipes and techniques to use our favorite spice in new ways.

Memorial Service for Jon Pederson

Untitled design.png

A memorial service to honor our tireless supporter and friend, Jon Pederson will be held at Mindekirken on Sunday, October 13, at 3:00pm. An outdoor reception will follow the service, and Norway House will be open for those who wish to sit inside with coffee. Norway House and Mindekirken are located on the same block with a shared parking lot.

The address for Mindekirken, The Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church is:
924 East 21st Street
Minneapolis, MN 55404

Among the many hats Jon wore in the Norwegian-American community, he served on the Norway House Board of Directors and was the former Board Chairman. He touched many lives through his steadfast involvement in our community until his sudden passing on August 29. His funeral was held on September 5 in Spicer, MN.

Click here to read the full obituary.

Baked Goods for the Memorial

In thinking of ways we could honor our beloved Jon Pederson, and friends have wondered what could they do, we are asking that anyone who would like to make a baked good, especially Norwegian, for his memorial service, it would be appreciated.

Stine Aasland, the Waffle Queen, who considered Jon her American father, will be making waffles, to honor him.  She will be serving waffles and coffee outdoors. Mindekirken and Norway House will serve coffee and baked goods. We feel this should best accommodate the anticipated amount of friends expected.

We will need the baked goods to be delivered to Norway House on Saturday, October 12th between the hours 10-2.

If you need to have the container/tin they are delivered in returned to you,  please mark it with masking tape and your name and phone number.

Please contact Nancy Olson by email or phone as to what you are contributing and approximate amount.  Such as 4 dozen Krumkake or 1 pan of lemon bars (small\large) – Jon’s favorite!

Volunteers will be needed to help with plating and serving.  Let Nancy know if you would be willing to help. We will be working around the Leif Eriksson Festival being held at the church in the morning, including a special lunch, and we will plate the cookies at 9:00 at the church and take them to Norway House after the service. After the service, we'll need help monitoring and cleaning up during and after the reception. As Jon used to say, “Many hands make light work.”

Ásgeir at The Cedar

How do you follow up the fastest selling debut album in Icelandic history, a record that out-performed even national treasures Björk and Sigur Rós’ first releases? At first 24-year-old sensation Ásgeir, returning at last in 2017 with daringly electronic new album Afterglow, pretended to those around him that the heat wasn’t on, that the stakes weren’t high. “I used to tell most people that I didn’t feel any pressure,” he laughs now. “But I was lying. I didn’t want to go into that discussion.”

HORIZON: In Honour of a Lived Life

  • University of Minnesota Theatre Arts & Dance (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

In this performance visiting performing artist, Ragnhild A. Mørch mixes childhood memories with her family’s stories – a jigsaw which stretches across three generations. A performance that shows how Norwegian-German history not only consists of broad political lines but of individual fate. And that it is the personal decision-making that decides which turns the road takes.

HORIZON is one element of Ragnhild’s two week visit to the University of Minnesota where she will work directly with students, educators, and community members.
