MOTHER: a vision of the Eisenhower-era mother; eager to please, ready to serve and blissfully sweeping the unmentionable under the rug

Judy Olausen’s personal project developed into a best-selling and influential book, Mother, published in 1996, broke a sales record at The New York Times.  It is also a loving tribute to her mother, Vivian, who modeled for the images, and took the artist four years to complete. Quoted in Harper’s, Olausen described her mother as part of “…a forgotten generation of women who put their kids and husbands before their own needs and hovered in the background, like furniture.” 

This canonically Minnesotan and Nordic-American artist will show her work in the Gallery at Norway House this Summer. You are heartily invited to experience the detailed scenes and humor guaranteed to make you smirk.

The first presentation in the Gallery at Norway House this year features two contemporary Danish ceramic artists, Michael Geertsen and Morten Løbner Espersen in tandem with Minnesota woodcarver, Mike Loeffler. These works offer an opportunity for Norway House audiences to explore how familiar objects - like vases, pitchers, and plates - can be re-imagined in creative ways, illustrating an infinite variety of possibilities, all within the theme of “Vessel.”

Luther College students and Norway House Inters, Emily Linder and Annika Vande Krol ‘19 will present their investigative research on this celebrated artist. Born in 1854 in Telemark, Norway, Gausta is best known for his rich landscapes and genre paintings as well as protraits of prominent, local individuals he met after moing to Harmony, Minnesota and attending Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

Nordic Art Exhibit: Glimpses of five Scandinavian Countries, from Norway Art

For the first time, Norway House and Norway Art are proudcing an art display, downstairs in the Coltvet Room. Norway Art's collection is the source of the selections of art treasures from five Scandinavian countries. The Norway Art® Scandinavian art importing business is based at Norway House, Minneapolis where visitors make appointments at their convenience to view some of the art from the Norway Art collection and possibly choose a treasure for their home or office. Since 1979 when Mary Jo Thorsheim established the Norway Art business, fine prints and paintings have been imported to the United States and Canada.
