The Edvard Grieg Society of Minnesota held its first-ever string competition June 3, 2017 to encourage musicians ages 18-26 studying or performing in a five-state area to explore the music of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Requirements included a variety of Nordic repertoire, including a Grieg Sonata. Four finalists performed in a winners’ recital later the same day. Distinguished judges included Mark Bjork, violin faculty at the University of Minnesota; Evelina Chao violist formerly of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra; and Peter McGuire, of the Minnesota Orchestra.

Winning the Grand Prize was Hannie McGarity, of Bellingham, WA. Ms. McGarity is a violin performance major at St. Olaf College Northfield, MN and performs with the St. Olaf Orchestra. First prize included a $1,500 award and trip to Bergen, Norway this October to perform at a seminar dedicated to Grieg’s chamber works, to be held at his historic home, Troldhaugen. Ms. McGarity with pianist Lori Folland performed the Grieg Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 3, Opus 45.

Placing second with a $1,000 award was John Rose, a St. Paul native pursuing a Bachelor of Music Degree in violin performance at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota.
