Perceptions of Norway — Portraits of Contemporary Norwegians by Nancy Bundt

  • The Torgerson Vestibyle 913 East Franklin Avenue Minneapolis United States (map)

In celebration of its 20th Anniversary, Norway House is proud to present a special encore showing of Nancy Bundt’s Perceptions of Norway exhibit on the walls of the K.A.H.R. Innovation + Culture Center. This hit show was last displayed in the Galleri at Norway House in 2018.

Perceptions of Norway seeks to expand common perceptions of Norwegians and their culture. Through the eyes of a fellow American, photographer Nancy Bundt — an expat residing in Norway for 25 years — guests to the exhibit will be able to witness the stories of a diverse group of Norwegians. These stories will allow guests to consider their own relationships with Norway while also discovering a renewed excitement for the culture by connecting their own stories with those of Norwegians today.

The style of these “environmental portaits” is inspired by portraits painted by Edvard Munch. His portraits displayed domestic interiors as reimagined spaces, which, together with their subjects, acted as metaphors for selfhood, vision, and spatiality.

Nancy Bundt

Nancy is a professional photojournalist and has been publishing her work in newspapers, magazines, books, and for companies for 50 years. Among other places, her work has been published in TIME, LIFE, and National Geographic Traveler. She has showcased in exhibits at the National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington D.C. and the Weisman Museum at the University of Minnesota. Nancy has worked on assignments in over 85 countries, but Norway, in particular, called to her.

Nancy had planned to move to the Caribbean in 1992, but after visiting islands in the North of Norway during the summer mesmerized by the turquoise water and mountains, she stayed. Her sister-in-law's relatives there introduced her to Jorn Hoelstad Pettersen, a teacher, and that was that. She moved back and forth from Minneapolis to that island in Vesteralen, above the Arctic Circle for three years and then married. They now live near Oslo, Norway right on the beach on the Oslo Fjord.
