Biographer David Hakensen talks about how he wrote the biography of nature writer Helen Hoover. How do you tell the tale of another's life?

David Hakensen, author of Her Place in the Woods: The Life of Helen Hoover, talks about who Helen Hoover is and how he went about writing her biography. Hoover is best known for her book, The Gift of the Deer. However, there is much more to her life and to her writing.

This talk is of interest both to people who enjoyed Hoover's written work and to aspiring authors who want to understand the process of taking an idea and turning it into a published book.

David will also discuss how he approached writing the book, how he located resources and how he utilized them. There will be ample time for questions.

David Hakensen is a writer and corporate communications consultant based in Minnesota. He currently serves on the board of Norway House and the Norwegian-American Historical Association and was president of the Executive Council of the Minnesota Historical Society from 2018-2023.

He has written for Format, Minnesota History, Mpls.St. Paul, The Norwegian-American and Twin Cities Business. Her Place in the Woods is his first book.
