Nordic Plant Lore with Kari Tauring: Kvann (Angelica)
June 6, 10:30AM-12:00PM
A plant so precious that you could pay your taxes with it. That’s what kvann has been to Norwegians into the Middle Ages.
An arctic plant, kvann was given the Latinized name Angelica archangelica or the angel among all archangels. Such is the reputation of this beloved plant. A biennial, it grows from seed and takes two years to develop a seed stalk. Every part of it in every stage of growth is healing and heady with fragrance.
When she read about kvann in Kathleen Stokker’s book, “Remedies and Rituals: Folk Medicine in Norway and the New Land” (2007) it became a research obsession. Kvann appears in Saga stories of late Iron Age kings. Export records during the Black Plague sho it was the first line of defense across Europe. In legal documents, heavy penalties were set for someone stealing it. There’s an ancient breed of kvann from Voss, Norway, but only the wild kvann stem can make the fadnu a flute that lasts two hours.
Learn about this treasure and Kari’s coming July adventure into the Arctic to learn about the fadnu all while sipping kvann tea.

Tree Identification Walk on West River Parkway
Spring has Sprung!
We are beginning to see change in the world around us. This part of the world is waking up from a long winter slumber! As spring arrives, so do new colors and smells. Have you ever wondered what happens to the trees and flowers during winter? Do you want to know more about spring perennials and how to identify them?
Join Becca Maxwell, an outdoor educator, for this 2-2.5 hour program. We will go for a hike and find different trees and flower species to identify. We will talk about their history and what benefits they have. We will also learn about invasive species. What makes a plant “invasive” and how does it affect native species?
We will meet in the parking lot of the Danish American Center, 3030 West River Parkway, Minneapolis. We will then cross the street to the pathways along the river. This walk is gently paced and entirely on pathways. Bring a child in a stroller or a friend in a wheelchair. This walk is designed to be relaxed and enjoyable for all ages and a wide range of abilities. Comfortable shoes recommended.

Syttende Mai Minnesota Banquet
For 45 years, the Norwegian community in Minnesota has gathered to celebrate Norway’s Constitution Day over great food, colorful flags, national songs, and inspiring speakers. Syttende Mai Minnesota is proud to continue this cherished tradition at Norway House, hosted in the Sundet Aula on Saturday, May 16
Colonel Christoffer Thomas Knutsen, Norway's Military Attaché and Assistant Defense Attaché in Washington, D.C., will speak about his experience serving his country in the Norwegian Army and describe how dynamics of NATO have evolved since Finland joined in 2023 and Sweden in 2024.
Giving old family journals, letters, and photos a new, creative life
This class meets for three sessions: Saturdays, May 16, 23, and 30 from 10:30 - 12:30.
If you’re like most of us, you might have boxes of old family journals, letters, photographs, records, receipts from multiple generations of your relatives. And, if you’re like most of us, we don’t know what to do with them: it doesn't feel right to throw it all out, nor does it feel right to just let it sit.
Finally, we have a solution! Bring yourself or multiple generations of your family! Why not use these “family archives” as inspiration, material, and jumping off points for creativity?
Don’t you think that your ancestors would like the physical remnants of their lives to see the light of day? To inspire you to create, to tell their story, or to tell it slant, or to create a different world with them as characters. In a very real way, it brings the past alive!
Join former Coffee House Press publisher and current literary agent Chris Fischbach as he leads a two-hour laid-back workshop that explores different creative activities you can do with your family archives. Don’t worry! This about ideas and fun, not about anyone judging anyone else’s work!
Please bring with you a fresh notebook, writing implements, erasers, highlighters, any art materials, really—along with any or all old written family materials. Prior to class, please come with a general idea about what your material contains, and pull 3-4 sentences or paragraphs that you might use as starting-off points during class.
Examples of what to bring: Old family journals, letters, photos, maps, documents such as marriage licenses, birth certificates, shopping lists, keepsakes, ticket stubs, travel documents, passports…you get the idea.
You’ll leave the class with new ways to discover and create, to make something new out of something old, and something you and your family can cherish for years to come. Families are welcome! Ages 12 - 120.
Still have questions? Please check out the FAQ section below where the instructor helps you understand what to expect in the class.
Please note: All sales for class seats are final. If you can't attend, you can transfer your place in class without any fees to another person.

Introduction to Orienteering
Learn about orienteering - what it is, how to do it, and how to find events that you can participate in
Competitive orienteering is the sport of navigation—often held in unfamiliar terrain—using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in the least amount of time. In a less competitive setting, orienteering is an activity well-suited to all ages and abilities.
In either case, orienteering is considered to be a “thinking sport” - one which combines strategic thinking, decision making, navigation skills (map reading and interpretation), and travel through any variety of terrain. Orienteering is a sport for everyone and a fun way to exercise your body and mind as you enjoy the outdoors.
This class session will provide introductory level information about the sport of orienteering. We will cover basic map reading and navigation skills, decision making and strategy, and basic compass navigation skills. Following some preliminary classroom instruction, we will put our new orienteering knowledge to work outdoors on an actual orienteering course on site at the Norway House.
This class is appropriate for all ages 6 yrs and up. Kids of any age are welcome (orienteering events are often enjoyed by little kids in backpacks and strollers). For the outdoor portion of this class, please dress appropriately for the weather of the day.
For a fun look at competitive orienteering, check out this short video showing kids at work (and play) on an orienteering course in the woods. Note that, in addition to running, there is lots of thinking and decision making going on at the same time.
Link to the video: https://youtu.be/gAbyuq2jEac?si=Ql-5usUeN9kv1Nfd
John and Gwen Daniels are members of the Minnesota Orienteering Club and they can help you find events and tell you more about the Club and what it offers.
Orieteering is very popular in Norway and one of the top orienteers in the world is Norwegian Kasper Fosser.
This event is free to Norway House members; $5 general admission; $3 to Ventura Village residents. Children under 8 are free.

Saturday Barnehage with Kari Stern - Hva har du der Krokodille-Knut?
Norwegian children's language teacher Kari Stern has a special class where students read, sing, dance, and do crafts in Norwegian.
Kari Stern leads a special session of Barnehage, a Norwegian language program for pre-schoolers. Two-to-four year olds and their parents or guardians read, sing, and play in Norwegian. Kari uses a children's book to set the theme and children get to hear, speak, read, and create art using the language. This month's book features ducklings having an adventure - who can resist?!
The price is per family, so if you have more than one two-to-four-year-old in the family, you may all attend for one price.
Kari teaches Barnehage, children's language class in Norwegian, each semester for 12 weeks at Norway House. Her special Saturday classes are an opportunity for children in Barnehage to have greater exposture to the language.
If you want your child to learn Norwegian, but were uncertain about classes, the Saturday Barnehage is wonderful opportunity to see how fun learning a language can be.
Please note, Norway House does not offer refunds. Please be sure you can attend on the day for which you registered.
