Design and Communications Specialist

Job Overview

The purpose of the Design and Communications specialist is to support both the Norwegian American Newspaper and Norway House through creative design and effective marketing strategies. The ideal candidate will have a passion for visual storytelling, compelling prose and a strong understanding of design principles. This role involves creating compelling graphics and texts for various platforms, including digital and print media. The Design and Communications Specialist will collaborate with other employees to deliver high-quality designs that align with our mission and marketing objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide art direction and ensure that all designs are consistent with brand guidelines and maintain high quality standards.

  • Manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.                                

  • Use software such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator to create designs as needed by the Norwegian American newspaper and Norway House.                      

  • Collaborate closely with editors, writers and other staff to deliver impactful, on-brand visual content.

  • Source, edit, and properly credit all visual collateral, adhering to copyright and attribution standards.

  • Contribute fresh ideas for illustrations, photo choices, and design approaches that align with the brand’s voice and editorial needs.

  • Develop and implement marketing communication plans that align with the company's goals and objectives.

  • Create and design high-quality marketing materials, including brochures, flyers, social media graphics, email campaigns, and website content.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure consistent messaging and branding across all channels.

  • Have input in Marketing Strategy and planning

  • Stay current with the latest design trends and techniques.

  • Assist other staff members as needed in creating digital content.

  • Use Air Table to manage the tasks and to communicate with the program coordinator and other staff.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, or a related field

  • Proven experience in publication design or a similar role

  • Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)

  • Excellent visual storytelling and layout skills

  • Ability to handle multiple projects and meet tight deadlines

  • Attention to detail and a keen eye for aesthetics

  • Experience with both print and digital media

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively with others.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience

  • Extensive portfolio demonstrating a range of skills

  • Additional training in marketing or business

    • Non-Exempt, hourly

    • Part-Time (20-30 hours per week)
