MOTHER: a vision of the Eisenhower-era mother; eager to please, ready to serve and blissfully sweeping the unmentionable under the rug

Judy Olausen’s personal project developed into a best-selling and influential book, Mother, published in 1996, broke a sales record at The New York Times.  It is also a loving tribute to her mother, Vivian, who modeled for the images, and took the artist four years to complete. Quoted in Harper’s, Olausen described her mother as part of “…a forgotten generation of women who put their kids and husbands before their own needs and hovered in the background, like furniture.”

This canonically Minnesotan and Nordic-American artist will show her work in the Gallery at Norway House this Summer. You are heartily invited to experience the detailed scenes and humor guaranteed to make you smirk.

Sauna Traditions: Stories, Songs, and Steam

Cleanliness of body, mind, and spirit were highly valued in Old Norse society along with the closeness and sanctity of family. Nothing satisfies these values quite like the steam bathing traditions. Icelanders took to the hot springs and the bath house was an essential element in the cultural life of Norway and Sweden. But the Finnish and Baltic cultures maintained sauna and spirtz traditions, including birthing, marriage, death, and seasonal changes into the Christian era.

We hear about "epigenetic" or ancestor trauma, the benefits of "mindfulness" and the power of "nature therapy." These concepts were well understood by Nordic people as öorlog and wyrd, being in Verdandi, and uttesetti.

What exactly does the Edda poetry say about Ragnarok, the doom of the gods? What does Snorre's prose Edda add to that? Of course it differs from the movies. This class is philosophy and history and a bit of "heathen theology" with just a dash of Hollywood. Let us search this ancient myth for lessons in our modern world.

Champagne, Music, & Peer Gynt Sweets - Fundraiser for EGSMN Piano Competition

The annual fundraiser for EGSMN. This year’s concert theme Grieg’s Favorite Grieg Songs - Sung in English! Proceeds will go toward Edvard Grieg Society of Minnesota’s 2019 Piano Competition celebrating young performers of Grieg and other Nordic composers.

Edvard Grieg wrote a total of 179 songs during his career. We know from the printed programs prepared for these concerts, most of which were preserved by Grieg himself, that he programmed some of his songs over and over again—hence, “Grieg’s favorite Grieg songs.” In 1988, the Edvard Grieg Committee – a group of musicologists from Norway and Denmark – commissioned EGSMN Board Member & reknowned Grieg scholar, William Halverson to create new English versions of most of Grieg’s song texts. The program on January 20 will use these English versions.

Performances by soprano Maria Jette, baritone Alan Dunbar, and pianist Sonja Thompson.
