This is an absolute beginner's genealogy class. Learn basic vocabulary, resources, principles, and how to build a chart.
If you have just discovered your ancestry with a DNA test or are not certain who your grandparents are but would like to research your family history, this is for you.
During this 90-minute class, genealogist and archivist Jeff Huset will carefully take you through the basic steps necessary to build a family tree. It's important to be grounded in your American ancestry before trying to research your Norwegian family.
It is helpful, but not required, to decide on one person in your family as the starting point for your search. This focus makes it easier to find your way through documents.
You will learn basic genealogy vocabulary in English and the Norwegian terms used in official records. By the end of class, you will know how to look for information, how to record the information you find, and what steps to take next.
Afterwards, you are invited to join the instructor for a cup of coffee at the Norway House Kaffebar and share family stories with your classmates.
